The Benson Murder Case by S.S. Van Dine
The Benson Murder Case, the first book in one of the most significant detective series of the early 20th century, features the introduction of legendary amateur sleuth Philo Vance and a plot that is partially based on the real-life murder of a well-known bridge player. This is a must-read for history lovers and for everyone who enjoys a good mystery because of its aristocratic Golden Age New York backdrop, arcane art cultural references, and insanely difficult jigsaw narrative. Playboy stockbroker Alvin Benson is found dead in his brownstone mansion, slumped over in an easy chair with a bullet in his head. This sets off a flurry of activity on Wall Street and in Manhattan's high society. Fortunately, they don't have to because ballistics experts, detectives, and the top brass of the NYPD are unable to solve the Philo Vance, New York's foremost flaneur and art expert, is on the case and has exactly the specialised knowledge required to decipher the evidence and identify the perpetrator. Vance learns a lot about the murderer, including his or her height, by meticulously analysing the crime scene and reenacting the fatal shooting. This is just the first of many deductive feats Vance will accomplish before the inquiry is over. Will he, however, be able to disprove the genuine murderer's alibi and establish their guilt beyond a reasonable doubt?
