PENNY

No one stops me. Elle doesn't say, “Penny, it’s okay, I know you didn't mean it.” She doesn't grab for my arm and pull me to her in one of her smothering hugs, or even meet my eye as I run past her. My cousin Elle’s eyes aren't on me until I’m at the stairwell, when they join everyone else in the dormitory hall at boring holes in the back of my head.
I had a family for a few days. An actual group of people that cared for me. A guy I was going to let myself be a little bit in love with, even if I was never going to admit it to him.
The concrete stairs are smooth and cold on the bottoms of my feet. I go down three flights of stairs to the yellow hall and pass my badge and Wyatt’s back and forth over the lock until it recognizes the combination and snicks open. I can’t believe, but am grateful, they haven’t changed the locks already. Their level of trust is astounding for a bunch of people who have a clue what’s coming.
Dragging in a deep breath, I hesitate for an instant, not wanting to leave everything behind. In truth, I was going to let myself be a little bit in love with all of them. I was going to let them take care of me. Nurture me.
Ha. Nature prevails. And it’s in my nature to destroy everything good that comes to me. I may have the power to save other people, but I’m never going to be capable of saving myself.
