The Mountain of Iron by Ursula Vernon
Lyra would not have recognized the young woman that she had grown into during the short time since becoming the protege of a dog-soldier and a student of the capricious natural magic force known as the Kytha. She has little time for such introspection, however, as she flees from the furiious Archmage of the House of Diamond. Accompanied by Sadrao, Trent and a couple of mercenaries they picked up along the way, Spite and Gunnar, they make their escape in the direction of Anu'tintavel, for they have learned that Vade is preparing his final assault on the elven nation and they have vital information to deliver. They have much ground to cover, and the world seems to delight in throwing up roadblocks in their path.

When Trent is ripped from them and returned home, Lyra's sense of personal loss wars with her fear of the power he possesses and the events to come. With a new friend by her side, the mysterious Tchang warrior Kuroinu, Lyra and her friends struggle through ever-escalating danger to Anu-tintavel. Once there, Lyra steps willingly into battle alongside her companions, a decision that eventually takes her all the way to the mountain of iron to reunite with Trent and face Vade himself. In order to save her friends and the elven nation, she must make terrible decisions and personal sacrifices. Love may be her only way out of the darkness, but it comes in unexpected forms.
