Death Followed Us by Kieran Dimitri
Robbed of the life he longs for, criminology student Ellis Alcántara spirals into an all-consuming internal war with himself after his mother's death. Residing in a small Virginian town that is plagued by dysfunction as well as being haunted by the looming shadow of his childhood, Ellis awaits his chance at redemption for years, only to find no answer. Until the murder of a wealthy family rocks the town to its core, rattling tooth and bone, but with the newfound terror comes an opportunity to revive Ellis's dying dream.

When Ellis offers to bring the case upon himself, he is met with his rival and a friend from his past, Alistair Caddell—a flowery and manipulative young prodigy who will take every risk to make Ellis his puppet. With great dismay comes prosperity as Ellis is given a role in Alistair’s newly constructed investigation team; a group of brightz young enigmatics who welcome him with open arms and a promise of friendship.

Rumors spread like wildfire, and so do lies, and soon the lines between fiction and reality begin to blur as Ellis's relationship with Alistair morphs from petty to destructive. Bitter grudges turn deadly. Friendships turn sour.

As Death sinks its teeth deeper into the untouched catacombs of his heart, Ellis starts to question the credibility of his own mind as well as the bonds he has formed. Time and fate, irrevocably, start to take their toll.
