Lizzy shot to her feet, looking directly at the man by the window now, her eyes wide. Shaking her head, she cried, “Mr. Darcy! I did not, sir!” It seemed imperative that she be exonerated. Little wonder he looked so coldly furious to be there. “I hid that letter, and I have not shown it to a single soul nor have divulged any part of it to anyone. I have not and I would not.”

As he had demanded it of her justice, Elizabeth had read Mr. Darcy’s letter with great care. She would have preferred that the dreadful afternoon at Hunsford be banished from her thoughts forever, but her spurned suitor’s defence, so elegantly penned on fine paper, could not be so readily dismissed.

It had been bad enough that his gentle adieu should so often trouble her dreams, but it was far, far more distressing when that letter fell into the worst possible hands, and he journeyed to Hertfordshire once again, concerned for his sister’s reputation.

Defying the one who holds that letter over them could prove ruinous to the lives of entire families. In this sixth Pride and Prejudice variation by Jeannie Peneaux, Mr. Darcy and Miss Elizabeth Bennet form an uncomfortable alliance while desperately searching for a resolution.
