Published in 1896 by Harper Brothers, Tom Sawyer, Detective was Twain's tenth work of fiction, in the form of a novella, and was released in the same year as its predecessor, Joan of Arc. Where Tom Sawyer Abroad was a Jules Verne pastiche, this book is a caricature of the detective genre which was popular at the time. Told as a first person narrative by Huck Finn, the plot involves Tom solving a difficult murder case inspired by a real-life incident that took place in Sweden.
