The Fawn by Magda Szabó
• The Fawn is the story of a woman, Eszter, who has become a leading actress in Budapest. It is addressed to her lost lover. We learn of her upper-class origins; her family’s gradual ruin; the contempt of rich and poor when the family are forced to dwell in the near-slums; the callousness she develops towards practically everybody and especially towards Angela, her rich, beautiful, gentle and successful school-friend; and how her hatred drives her to take away Angela’s fawn and, years later, her husband.
• The development of the action on two levels — one, an imaginary apology to her lover about things untold and hidden; the other, the unfolding of her life story — creates an atmosphere of mounting tension. The characterization is beautifully evoked and the atmosphere of the period, before and after the war, is created with great feeling.
