The first time I saw Grayson Phillips, I tripped over a skateboard. His scrawny seven-year-old self saved me from scraped knees and sentenced me to a fate of pining after my brother’s best friend for years.

I’ve moved on from childish, unrequited crushes. I’ve grown up. Now, I fix faulty hearts for a living. I repaired my own a long time ago.

Or so I thought…until he returns to our hometown on leave from the Air Force. For the first time, not everything between us feels one-sided. But it’s all temporary. He’ll take off—literally.

I’m a fly by to him. Nothing more than a passing interest. A distraction.

And if anything finally happens between us, I’m pretty sure I’ll be saying goodbye to my heart for good.
