Young doctor Hannah is forced to flee to Zelary, a small village in the Moravian mountains. In order to avoid persecution and arrest she marries Joza, the eponymous Joe, a local blacksmith and her former patient. As she recovers from the shock of adjusting to her new life in exile, Hannah begins to fall in love with the countryside.
