Real Monsters by Liam Brown
Five soldiers wander a nameless desert, hunting for ‘monsters.’ The only
problem is, they don’t seem to be able to find any...
Reeling from the terrorist attack that killed her father and levelled her
hometown, Lorna lurches through an inebriated adolescence until she finds
salvation in a young enlistee called Danny. However, her dream of a stable life
is shattered when Danny is called to serve overseas. As the quiet boy she
married is slowly transformed into a violent, hate-filled man, Lorna seeks
solace in the anti-war movement. And then she discovers she’s pregnant...
Meanwhile Danny is lost in the desert. Most of his unit are dead – killed, it
would seem, by a hoard of bloodthirsty monsters. With their equipment
destroyed and their food running out, a small band of men stumble through
the sand and shadows, desperate to find salvation before the monsters find
them. As their hope fades, the men begin to turn on each other, until it finally
becomes clear that only the most monstrous will survive...
Told in a series of letters to their infant son, Real Monsters is the story of two
young lovers with a war wedged between them. Like Fight Club for the 9/11
generation, it is both surreal and ferociously recognisable, an essential
allegory for our war-torn times.
