Something was going on up there where the weather satellites twinkled merrily around in their orbits - something that had nothing whatever to do with weather. But you don't just drop in on a satellite, or its related sphere, at least not unobtrusively. And in this instance it was necessary to be very unobtrusive indeed since the owner of the sphere was a man of extreme resources whose umbrage it would definitely not be good to excite.
So a technician failed to return from a leave - and Mike Cadogan was briefed to take his place. It was only after he got aboard that he realized nobody had been fooled by this maneuver - and that proved something was very wrong indeed...
