In Wereburg, New York, a young woman named Destiny Riser has lost her parents in the plague but saved her little brother, Chance. But the outpost she brings him to is still young and learning and in an accident of fate, it is ravaged by vampires. Then the Guard brings Peter to the outpost...a man inflicted with vampirism but who also has a natural immunity that holds the disease at tenuous bay. A bond forms between Promise and Peter and she sees a different possibility for her lost and changed baby brother...she sees the possibility of a cure.

In a desperate attempt to save her brother, Promise and Peter must take a dangerous ride to the army base three states away where they are working on the cure.
