In 1923, Weird Tales, destined to be one of the most influential magazines in American genre fiction history, published its first issue in March. The cover advertised Ooze, a novelette by Anthony Rud, who would one day go on to become the editor of Adventure, another influential genre magazine. Ooze predated the classic film The Blob by thirty-five years and, trapped behind the ever-expanding curtain of copyright, it seemed lost forever.
In 2019, Ooze finally entered the public domain. The original can be hard to find in digital form, as half-blurry scans are the norm for periodicals of this era.
The New Public Domain Collection seeks to highlight, adapt and distribute works that have recently entered the public domain. The purchase price is compensation for finding the material, adapting it to a readable format, correcting any errors, and attempting to situate it within culture and history.
