We’ve called our third anthology Variations on a Theme. In one sense, this collection is a reaction to our previous one, Notes From Underground, where we celebrated artistic freedom by accepting writers without knowing what stories they were going to provide. This year, we asked writers to create work inspired by one of two stories: “The Tinderbox,” a classic fairy tale, or “The Huntsman,” by Anton Chekhov. Our mindset with this proposition wasn’t to restrict the writing or to provide a crutch for imagination. Instead, we hope the theme served to foster unexpected creativity—a rebellion within the confines. These stories will all reveal some commonalities. At the same time, they showcase a wide range of styles, emotions, and relationships that play off of one another in a beautiful way. Once again, we hope you enjoy reading them.
