Set in the Maya World. In a world of steam and airships, Maitland industries needs more iron and nickel. Jim Maitland sets off on the airship Sprite, back to his lover Kes in Kuching. Events interrupt the trip, he gets caught in the troubles in Yorkville where the hipostles Bob Zim and Dave Ronk take a stand. Marie surveys the White City and it comes alive. Jim, Kes, Marie and Brent start a new adventure. The secrets of the White City become clearer. A revolution is planned. Arnold gets a makeover. Power grows for Maitland Industries and Kuching Berhad. Three groups of Eugenie sects exist in the world, physical, mental and political. Many of the sects re-integrated into society. Jim Maitland, is a physical. Marie Galton is a genius from the mental sect. Steam from ponspacks drives new machines including airships and submersibles. Maya trees are scattered throughout the world. When animals die, near a tree a pod grows. For humans, this pod is a red ball, the size of a cricket ball. The pod holds all the memories of the dead person but has no 'soul' no ambition. Kilcane sat and watched her. She was heavily pregnant but she still moved quickly and with little sign of discomfort. They had met before and he knew she was a clever administrator and a brilliant business woman. There had been rumours of a Eugenie background but that was neither here nor there. One thing he knew for sure was that Kuching Berhad had not become the biggest trading concern in this area of the world without violence.
