The Midas Rush by Edward Hoornaert
Gold! Mystery!

Humans from all worlds flock to Jones following the discovery of an ancient village of the planet's intelligent natives, transformed into solid gold.

Tresky Buffrum seeks neither gold nor mystery, just a nibble of adventure before settling into the quiet life of a shepherd. What the naive virgin finds instead is a chaste, inscrutable bride who lures him to danger and intrigue at the Midas Crater.

Virtrillica is an old Sloth, one of Jones's mute, aloof, mind-reading natives. She befriends Tresky, which is unheard of. For 500 years, Sloths have manipulated unsuspecting humans and used them like reality TV. Now they're planning to cancel the show--and all humans on the planet. Virtrillica wants to save mankind, but she needs Tresky's help. One little problem: she can't communicate with him.

Grigannna Hannu is a dour, pessimistic policewoman assigned to guard the caravan to the Midas Crater. She unearths more troubles than she can handle, including scheming offworlders, restless Sloths, a psychotic stalker--and a crush on newlywed Tresky.

Ebbril (Tresky's bride) and Jo-Ghee (Prince of Palastrac) carry dangerous, unfathomable secrets to the Midas Crater. Secrets that ensnare Tresky and all his companions.

As human fanatics and manipulative Sloths gather like vultures to destroy the crater-—and humanity's future--innocent young Tresky finds himself the only one who can save his world.
