The Second World War, bad as it was, could have been worse. For example, the Axis could have won; there really could have been a Thousand Year Reich filled with endless streams of concentration-camp victims and strutting, jack-booted supermen. Or, victorious, we might have lost a million soldiers invading the Home Islands. In 1941 that was an optimistic prediction; it would have taken a miracle, some sort of super weapon, to give us an easier victory over the fanatics who ruled the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere. In a war in which even victory was nightmare, only science fiction could save us...
