Upon Which Victor Viper Sat: A Cogling Short Story by Jordan Elizabeth
“Bloody rats all in a hat,
Upon which Victor Viper sat.
Little feet with little shoes,
Little people with little hues.
Flames and smoke all leaping high,
Upon which we all might die.”

While watching a play in Zink Garden, a mechanical actor goes haywire and steals a box that Lady Rachel holds dear. When Edna goes after the machine, she realizes its actually an urchin in disguise. He leads her into the cursed Zink Hotel. Edna doesn't believe in curses.

But maybe she should.
