Yesterday's Pawn by W.T. Quick
When alien races discovered that travel between two worlds was possible, the knowledge reached humans who began searching for a Faster-Than-Light drive of their own. That was when Garry came up with the idea that the secret of the FTL drive was held -- in the form of a mysterious artifact -- by the Kurs'ggthan, a long-vanished race. So when he saw the little, rat-faced man staggering into his father's pawnshop with what was obviously a Kurs'ggthan artifact, he couldn't turn it down. And that was how the trouble began: Within hours the shop was destroyed, his father was in the hospital, and Garry himslf was hunted by interstellar agents on a chase through space and time. He had become the ultimate pawn in a conflict that could destroy the human race!
