Ilión 1 by Dan Simmons
A team of sentient robots from Jupiter's lunar system embark on a mission to Mars, where they find a race of metahumans living out existence as the Greek gods of Olympus. These "gods" have recreated the Trojan War with reconstituted Greeks and Trojans, staffing it with scholars from Earth's history who observe the events and ensure their accuracy to Homer's Iliad. One of these scholars, Thomas Hockenberry, finds himself tangled in the midst of the interplay between the gods and their playthings, and sends the war reeling in a direction Homer could have never imagined.
